Having owned this BBQ (or Braai) for over a year I used it for the first time last weekend and, oh my goodness, my chicken was the best-tasting chicken and the best-looking chicken on the whole campsite. These usually come in black but a special edition of mid-grey or green is a perfect choice to coordinate with your vehicle, so when you take pictures for the gram, it all looks and tastes delicious.

Loved how the grass underneath was unscathed, even without placing the lid underneath—which I did purely to keep the kit together; I had a grill plate too which I didn’t use this time. I cooked my chicken rubbed with a lemon herb mix and half a can of organic stout up its bottom, along with a side dish of peppers and courgettes in the Dutch oven I placed directly into the coals. The cooking time was about two hours for the chicken. Falling off the bone it was well-cooked.

The lid was great for when we wanted to go to sleep. Easy to clean and tip out the cold coals. Popped it back in the bag and we were off. A bit heavier than the fold-ups and travel kits—but perfect for my Land Rover weekends and longer-stay trips, and it looks lovely in my garden too. Not used the Bread Oven as yet. Next time.

I picked this book up at an open air autojumble in the summer. Quite apt really. I am always after books on fascinating women. Written by a chap – well, there is quite a lot of commentary in the book that suggests that there is some kind of difference between men and women achieving things and that really annoys me. However, it is a great insight into the life of this amazing lady who made her name in Trials riding and when allowed to do so in Speedway riding.

Fay’s career spanned the mid-20th century and what I love about the book is the incredibly detailed bibliography and chronology of notes – at the back of the book. I am now in the process of going to the London Library to research all the bibliography.

I actually know little about Speedway and the bikes she rode. The Douglas bike that the author said, ‘she handled with power and grace,’ and other race accounts are detailed, so, perhaps I must take note of the details and think how it must have been to be at those race meetings and ignore the idea he writes as a chap, which of course he is!

I am still to continue reading this book. It will one of those I will use as reference for when I take to a motorcycle this year and just ponder about how Fay Taylour would have tackled the journey and what she would have worn. I might not be Queen of the Speedway, but I will most certainly be the Queen on my adventure.

I bought this book from Hatchard’s Piccadilly two weeks before Christmas in the hope I would sit by the fire and read it from start to finish. The book didn’t even make Christmas week. Cover to cover a total farce and you know it would be from the off. I have a new hard back version, but in my 1964 Series 2a Land Rover I have plenty of second hand soft back P.G Wodehouse stories – always at the ready for when my car might want to take a break from a journey.

Whichever story you choose from this sublime storyteller you will be most amused on every page turn. This one, my damsel in distress, we find the Earl of Mashmoreton’s lively daughter thinking she is love with Geoffrey Raymond but along comes along a cheerful American song-writer George Bevan with just one meeting with him when she climbs into his passing cab to escape her pompous brother – wait are we already confused? Good, this story gets increasingly entwined and you will simply have to read it to know what on earth I am talking about.

There’s a butler a page, an aunt and of course the father who – surprisingly – or perhaps not so – stays in his garden, gardening whilst the whole farce begins to take shape. What happens at the end you may ask? I shan’t tell you. A lot happens before the end happens – is all I shall say. P.G Wodehouse is necessary for the avid traveller. Short stories to let you escape from wherever you are. Best to find him in a second-hand bookshop. If you discover a first edition – at a decent price. Bag it, it is Priceless.

There is always a book beside my bed, well a pile of them actually, but one of at the top of the pile these past few months has been Wayward Women. I first had this book out of the London Library – a private members library in London, then after renewing the loan every three months I finally bought myself a copy.

From Glamour of the back and beyond to life in the Bush and camping, religious exodus to travel for journalism, this book encapsulates the women traveller of the 17th, 18th, 19th and Mid-Twentieth Centuries. Noting women engineers, scientists, explorers and women who simply were ‘bored’ with their perhaps ‘hum drum’ lives.

I found many of ‘my’ women here in this book from the Honourable Mildred Bruce and Gertrude Bell, as well as Lady Frances Egerton and Beryl Markham. The list is endless of amazing women who, simply knew they could. Admittedly some were wives of notable husbands, who had the ways and means however, many were women who simply had the gumption.

It is a book that any modern female traveller ought to have by their bedside. This book is a perfect dip in and out book, although you may find you spend three days devouring it. It is a book to hand down to your daughters and nieces. It is a book to gift any individual wayward women in your lives.

Oxford University Press – ISBN – 0-19-280233-X
