Motorcycle brand KLIM may be best known for high-end riding gear, but the new STOW AWAY (and the women’s ECLIPSE) prove that serious waterproof protection isn’t only for two wheels. Designed for motorcyclists, hikers, overlanders, cyclists and anyone who spends long days in unpredictable weather, these jackets bring KLIM’s premium Gore-Tex engineering to everyday outdoor life.

The design brief is simple: maximum protection, minimum bulk. A two-layer Gore-Tex® shell–backed by the brand’s “Guaranteed to Keep You Dry®” promise–blocks wind and rain while a moisture-wicking mesh liner keeps the inside comfortable. Large under-arm vents with dual sliders let you fine-tune airflow on climbs, trail runs or when you’re working around camp.

Details matter when the weather turns foul. A roll-away hood seals out driving rain, Velcro-closed cuffs lock onto gloves, and a draw-cord hem keeps cold drafts out. 3M™ Scotchlite™ reflective elements add low-light visibility for roadside repairs, night hikes or late-evening dog walks.

Packability is the ace in the hole

The jacket stuffs neatly into one of its own side pockets and compresses with built-in straps so you can lash it to a rucksack, bike frame or pannier. No separate bag, no juggling—just grab, pack and go.

The ECLIPSE offers the same technical spec in a women-specific cut, proving that weatherproof performance doesn’t have to look or feel like borrowed kit.

Fresh air, the backcountry at night, and a canvas roof overhead. The best recipe for waking up sharp and ready to tackle the world—after a strong mug of coffee, of course.

I’ll pick a tent any day of the week. Ground or rooftop, it doesn’t matter. Weather? Hardly worth worrying about. All I ask is that my fabric abode keeps rain off from above and damp from below. Temperatures can be managed with layers and the right sleeping bag.

My rooftop tent is the most practical when I’m in my own car. My Nordisk Asgard is a spacious single-pole bell tent that’s hosted me, Elisabeth and a dog—but for solo travel it’s too big and demands serious packing space. For super-light trips I turn to the Nordisk Lofoten 2. It’s “two-person” in name only: just enough room for me and a pair of boots. I’ve camped out in all of them, in all seasons.

Still, I wanted a shelter built for solo travel that would

house me and a scatter of clothes,

fend off any weather,

pitch and pack in minutes, and

stay reasonably compact.

How about a swag? More precisely, how about the ARB Skydome?

What Is a Swag?

The swag began as a simple bedroll—a canvas sheet wrapped around a blanket and a few personal items—carried by itinerant workers moving through the Australian bush in the 19th century. Shearers, drovers, fencers, miners and farmhands packed their lives into a roll slung over the shoulder. They slept where the work was: under Eucalyptus trees, beside stock routes, along rail cuttings. The word itself likely travelled from British thieves’ slang—“swag” meaning loot—to the Antipodes, where it came to mean the traveller’s bundle.

Fun fact: The famous phrase Waltzing Matilda grew directly out of this world. “Waltzing” comes from the old German walzen—to travel or wander—while “Matilda” was bush slang for a swag. To “waltz Matilda” literally meant to roam the backcountry with your swag on your back. The expression surfaced in the late 1880s and gained national fame in 1895 when poet Banjo Paterson wrote lyrics for the song of the same name. His ballad of a wandering swagman became so beloved that Waltzing Matilda is still regarded as Australia’s unofficial national anthem.

Early swags were brutally simple. A waxed or oiled canvas sheet on the ground, a wool blanket or two, maybe a coat pulled over your head when the rain came sideways. No poles, no zips, no insect mesh. They were cheap, heavy and tough—perfect for men on foot or horseback who valued durability over comfort. Through the gold rushes, droughts and the Depression years, swaggies became part of the national folklore: self-reliant, transient, gone at first light.

By the mid-20th century, as vehicles replaced horses and camels on the long runs, the swag evolved. Foam mattresses were stitched in. Zips and storm flaps appeared. Fly-mesh kept the mozzies at bay. The big leap was structural: hoops and short poles turned the flat roll into a “dome” or “hooped” swag, lifting canvas off the face and creating a small, weather-shedding shelter you could still unroll in a minute. Modern swags use tighter-woven ripstop canvas, heavy PVC floors and stronger stitching—built to shrug off grit, rain and UV for years.

Long-Term Test

I moved into my one-man ARB Skydome in March 2021. I can say without doubt that I slept in it for more than a year straight: blistering summer heat, heavy snow, pan-European travel, one-night stopovers and long lay-ups. One storm stands out. During the 2021 Ahr Valley disaster—when biblical downpours turned the ground into a lake and floods killed more than 180 people—not a single drop made it inside the Skydome. The canvas stayed bone-dry.

More than four years on, the tent has plenty of stories to tell.

Built for more than just the Australian outback

Out of the Box

The Skydome is a single-skin canvas shelter with a built-in mattress at its heart. It’s no ultralight—rolled up, it’s a hefty bundle cinched with two strong straps—but set-up is a breeze.

Release the straps.

Assemble the three hoops and clip them into place to form a tunnel.

Slot the two cross-poles between the hoops for rigidity. Done.

Because I knew I’d spend serious time inside, I added an ARB Stretcher. Game-changer. You get in and out without crawling and gain a dry storage space beneath. There’s even a boot bag to keep muddy footwear out of the sleeping area.

A dedicated swag bag is available, but I’ve managed fine without it. The stretcher bag is large enough to carry it and the boot bag neatly.

Key Features

Canvas: 500 g/m² (35 % cotton / 65 % polyester) breathes well and blocks wind and rain.

Ventilation: Large side doors plus a window at each end provide excellent airflow.

Bug protection: Fine mesh on all openings keeps out mozzies and other insects.

Zips: Big, robust and easy to clean.

Floor: Heavy-duty PVC basin about 7 cm high for superb waterproofing.

Mattress: 75 mm foam—good comfort as supplied, excellent on the stretcher.

Storage: Wall pocket, bottle holder by the door, overhead mesh.

The tension pole is great for airing kit in the morning

Living with It

Solo travel demands simplicity. With no mattress to inflate, only a few minutes separate parking the truck from crawling into bed. The Skydome is freestanding—you can skip pegs unless the wind really picks up.

One aspect I really appreciate about this swag—and many others of the same genre—is how well it suits travel in unpredictable weather. Because everything is self-contained, you can set up in pouring rain with a gale blowing, without any of the faff that comes with inner tents and fly sheets.

Inside, there’s ample room to change clothes while lying down and plenty of stash points for phone, keys and a water bottle. Combined with the stretcher, sleeping comfort is close to a real bed—no exaggeration. Climbing out and straight into your boots instead of crawling onto wet mud is pure luxury.

The lack of a roof vent led to mould on the ceiling" class="wp-image-19814" srcset="https://overland-europe.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/ARB-Skydome_1-mould-819x1024.webp 819w, https://overland-europe.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/ARB-Skydome_1-mould-600x750.webp 600w, https://overland-europe.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/ARB-Skydome_1-mould-240x300.webp 240w, https://overland-europe.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/ARB-Skydome_1-mould-768x960.webp 768w, https://overland-europe.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/ARB-Skydome_1-mould.webp 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px" />
Not a pretty sight. Fortunately, ARB has upgraded the Series 2 with a roof vent

Maintenance has been minimal but not zero. I re-waterproofed the canvas once after scrubbing off tree sap. More troublesome was mould: the Series 1 Skydome lacks roof vents, so condensation builds at the highest point. In warm weather it dries; in cold it lingers and breeds mould. Vinegar washes and a full re-proofing solved it, but it’s a chore and not a one-time fix.

The hoops have taken the worst punishment. All three eventually split at the joints—a mix of stress and UV exposure. Duct tape held them for a while, but after the third failure I’ll need a new set.

Highlights
– Robust outback-grade materials
– True one-person setup and takedown
– Spacious interior for a solo sleeper
– Lie back, unzip the door and watch the stars
– Stretcher compatibility equals home-bed comfort

Headaches
– Series 1 roof lacks vents → condensation and mould risk (fixed in Series 2)
– Large door lets rain blow in during entry/exit
– Hoop tubes weaken over years of heavy use

Verdict

Modern swags are designed for vehicle-based travel rather than backpacking. They pitch fast, breathe well and seal tight. The trade-off remains the same: extra weight and bulk in exchange for speed and simplicity. After more than four years of heavy use—including over a year of continuous nights—the ARB Skydome has proved its worth.

The Series 1 isn’t flawless: lack of roof vents means you must manage condensation and the poles eventually weaken under UV and stress. Yet these are serviceable issues—mould can be cleaned, canvas re-proofed, poles replaced. The Series 2 adds roof vents, which is a welcome upgrade, but the original still performs to a level most users will never fully test.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="819" src="https://overland-europe.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/ARB-Skydome_1-one-night-stopover-1024x819.webp" alt="arb skydome series 1.
If you can spare the packing space and want a shelter that shrugs off foul weather with minimal fuss, the Skydome remains one of the most robust and comfortable solo options I’ve used—and I own everything from ultralight backpacking tents to full-size bell tents.

Nearly 18 months ago, I published a review of the highly practical BOXIO Wash and picked up another potentially useful product: BOXIO Cook. So, here’s a no-frills review after countless hours of outdoor kitchen antics.

Will it fit in the car? A slightly superfluous question: It’s an accessorised Eurobox.

LxWxH: 40 x 30 x 27.5 cm and approx. 4.7 kg.

It plays nicely with other standard Euroboxes, so yes, it’ll slide neatly into 4x4s, vans and trucks. Not just that, it stows the vital bits and bobs you need to prepare and eat your meals. One box. Everything in one place.

Well, that’s the theory. So what have I learned?

Out of The Box

Just like the blue and yellow Swedish furniture brand, BOXIO makes the customer responsible for final assembly. Inside the package: hex key, spanner, and easy-to-follow instructions. Before you can boil some water or fry a sausage, you’ll need a clean workspace and fifteen to twenty spare minutes to put the Cook together.

But this is not rocket science.

At the end of the exercise, you’ve got a black Eurobox with a hinged stainless-steel hob unit, complete with wind shield and a single burner. Lift the hob and you’ll find secure storage for two gas cartridges plus ample room for pots, pans, kettle, herbs, spices, crockery and cutlery.

Finish? It all comes together nicely and you won’t be cutting yourself on any of the edges.

In Use

Let’s be real: When stopping for a coffee break on a long haul, or settling into camp for the night, minimal faff is great for boosting the comfort factor. Stop the car. Pull out the Cook. Get on with hot food and drink.

Be organised. It helps if you don’t just throw loose items into the box because you need to clear the space and ensure the vents are free when you light the gas. Once the Cook is stood on a solid surface and the cavity is cleared, turn on the flow of gas at the cartridge, lower the hob (which conveniently locks in the upright position), raise the wind shield, and light the easy to adjust flame.

Interestingly, the stove is not equipped with piezo spark. But hey, we all travel with the means to start a fire, so there aren’t any excuses for being unable to get a flame. I just feel it would be slightly more elegant if there was only a button to press.

Clear warnings, even after you’ve thrown the instruction away

The stove size is big enough to take a frying pan 25 cm in diameter. Enough room for most pots, kettles and popular stove top ovens, such as the Omnia or Hajka—unfortunately, it’s just a bit too tight to accommodate the Grove Grill & Oven.

Depending on where you set the Cook, the Eurobox gives it a firm footing and raises the cooking height—a neat detail I really appreciate—and puts it at the same level as the Wash which, with the optional bamboo chopping board in place instead of the plastic lid, doubles as a work surface.

I love it when things can be combined for increased practicality.

Do I just use the Cook when I’m out and about? No. Frying fish or deep-frying doughnuts is best done out of doors if you don’t want odours lingering in the kitchen. So, the Cook has a designated place under the roof in the garden as well.

Durability

Robust plastic and weatherproof stainless steel. The Cook is designed to cope with knocks associated with bumpy trails and outdoor living. Things can rattle around inside if they’re not properly stowed…use kitchen towels to cut the decibels.

Everything is solid. Of course, it has a gathered a few blemishes but, then again, so has my car. Overland with either and scratches will result. Patina. The surfaces are easy to keep clean and won’t rust.

The gas hose and regulator are approved and good quality.

Verdict

The BOXIO Cook is a tough little kitchen box that just works.

If you’re tired of skeleton stoves that need assembly every time and offer a wobbly footing for bigger pots, the BOXIO Cook is a clean, dependable upgrade. Use it on the tailgate, stacked on another Eurobox under the stars, or inside the van.

Competition

How would you like to take a BOXIO Cook on your next adventure? We’re giving away one brand-new BOXIO Cook this month. All you have to do is click this link before September 30th, 2025, and you might be cooking your next camp meal on the house. Good luck!

Why We Needed It

Most of the time, we travel with just one or two vehicles. But when we planned an adventure through the backlands of Portugal with four cars and two adventure motorcycles, we knew we’d be short on CB radios for convoy comms. After weighing up several new models, we went for the Midland Alan 42 DS, an upgraded, multi-band, 40-channel AM/FM handheld CB with plenty of features and accessories straight out of the box.

What “Digital Squelch” Actually Means

If you’ve never used a CB before, squelch is the function that mutes background noise when no one is talking. Traditional squelch is set manually with a dial—too low and you hear constant static, too high and you might miss weak signals.

Digital squelch does the job for you automatically. It uses signal processing to filter out unwanted noise while letting actual voice transmissions through. The result: clearer conversations and less fiddling with controls while driving.

Built for Travel Across Europe

When you’re overlanding across multiple countries, band switching is essential to comply with local CB regulations. The 42 DS handles this easily. Combined with automatic squelch, a noise blanker, and ANL (Automatic Noise Limiter) filters, reception stays crisp and background noise minimal. You can understand and be understood without constant adjustments.

In the Vehicle

For in-car use, the battery pack slips off the handset and is replaced by a 12V car adapter—saving battery power and enabling you to connect an external antenna for better range. A jack on the handset lets you plug in an external speaker.

We found the wrist strap handy for hanging the handset from the rear-view mirror while on the highway, and the backlit display is bright and easy to read day or night.

The full set including pouch, flexi-antenna, radio, in-car adapter kit, rechargeable pack, charger, and battery pack. I recommend investing in a quality external antenna to ensure best reception/transmission. The set does not include batteries or rechargeable batteries

On Foot

Out of the car, you can use either:

A pack for 6 AA batteries

A pack for 8 rechargeable batteries (charger included)

The set also includes a protective pouch—useful, though it makes swapping between car and pedestrian use a bit fiddly.

Real-World Use

During our Portugal trip, we kept it simple: same channel for everyone, channel lock on to prevent accidental changes. That meant we could focus on driving, navigation, and spotting hazards without worrying about settings.

Since then, I’ve used the 42 DS on solo trips across the continent, even joining casual conversations with long-haul truckers after scanning through the channels.

Why It Matters Off-Road

Off-pavement travel often means poor visibility—either due to terrain or darkness. A second person with a CB can guide the driver through tricky sections, cutting down the risk of damage to both vehicle and crew. For the price, the Alan 42 DS is a solid, reliable, and versatile bit of kit.

Buying Tips for First-Time CB Users

If you’re buying your first CB radio—especially for overlanding—here are a few things to consider:

1. Choose the right format
Handhelds like the 42 DS are portable and flexible, but a fixed in-vehicle CB with a roof-mounted antenna can give more range. Many overlanders carry one of each.

2. Antenna matters more than radio power
The legal output power for CB in most of Europe is 4 watts AM/FM. The real difference in range comes from your antenna setup—height, position, and tuning.

3. Keep it simple in a convoy
Pick a channel, lock it, and agree on basic call signs or phrases. The fewer settings you fiddle with, the less likely you are to miss important messages.

4. Learn your local laws
Some countries require you to use specific channels or limit CB use to certain bands. The 42 DS can switch bands, which keeps you legal.

5. Test before you travel
There’s no point discovering your batteries are flat or your antenna cable is damaged once you’re already in the middle of nowhere. Check your kit before you roll.

Verdict

The Midland Alan 42 DS delivers good value, flexibility for cross-border travel, and clear comms in both convoy and solo situations. Whether you’re exploring the wilds of Portugal or just tackling local trails, it’s a dependable choice.

It’s time, my fellow outdoor enthusiasts, to cast aside the shackles of modern urbanity and dive headlong into the wild abyss of rooftop camping. As the sun dips below the horizon and casts a warm golden glow over your rooftop tent, you may feel the thrill and anticipation of sleeping under the stars as you prepare to embrace the untamed wilderness in all its chaotic glory.

For many outdoor enthusiasts, rooftop tents signify freedom, transforming any patch of ground into a potential campsite, and the seasoned adventurer will have their go-to camping gear standing in readiness.

However, there are those amongst us who will be joining the community for the first time and, understandably, may not already have their equipment lined up. So, before you embark on that first adventure, it’s essential to pack wisely. Begin with a minimalist approach—you don’t want to be lugging unnecessary stuff around with you; otherwise, you’ll quickly learn how frustrating it is to rummage through a mountain of kit in a bid to find the one item you actually need. You will learn what the essentials are as time goes by…just make a note of whatever is missing and add it for the next trip.

THE TENT

First and foremost, let’s get this straight: the rooftop tent is your throne of freedom, your bastion against the wild. Familiarise yourself at home with its quirks and know how to pitch and stow it, lest you find yourself cursing it like a bad hangover on a windswept hill.

SLEEPING GEAR

A good night’s sleep is crucial to enjoying your adventure. Invest in a quality sleeping bag that’s appropriate for the season you’ll be camping. For minimalism, a lightweight, packable sleeping bag with a comfort rating suitable for your expected temperatures will suffice. If you are travelling with a loved one, you might want to make sure your sleeping bags are compatible and zip together.

COOKING GEAR

Now let’s talk about the joys of cooking in the wild. Don’t jump into the full-blown kitchen set straight away. There are two basic options to consider: do you like fires and a bbq, or do you crave the simplicity of a stove? Depending on the season and how dry everything might be, an open fire may be unwise or illegal, so be prepared.

A fire pit made from a circle of rocks, fuelled by collected wood and supplemented with a grate, is the minimalist approach to campfire hospitality and a hearty meal. However, conditions may indeed prohibit this survivalist approach. A compact camping stove will do the trick—it doesn’t have to be gas, there are plenty of fuel-fired alternatives that won’t break the bank. You’ll welcome the simplicity when you want to brew some tea or coffee while you check your route. Just don’t forget your lighter or matches.

When it comes to cookware, simplicity is the key: snag a small pot, a frying pan, and a trusty spork or two.

As far as water is concerned, bring plenty in reusable water bottles and consider a water filter, as nothing will ruin a trip faster than an upset stomach from untreated water.

FOOD

Meal prep is crucial. You’re not hunting and gathering here, so simplify! Think wraps that you can prepare before you leave, and stock up on tins or, better still, some dehydrated meals; you could be a culinary wizard with a splash of boiling water.

Snacks are pure gold: trail mix, energy bars, or any other high-calorie delights are perfect for pushing through your mid-afternoon existential crises.

WARDROBE — LAYER UP

One of the keys to packing effectively is to choose clothing that layers well, allowing you to adapt to changing weather conditions. A base layer, an insulating layer, and a waterproof outer layer are all you need to stay comfortable.

If you’re planning to go on a hike, don’t forget to bring a couple of pairs of moisture-wicking socks and a sturdy pair of boots that have been broken in to avoid blisters. A hat and sunglasses are also essential for protection from the sun.

If you’re heading out on a longer trip, remember you can wash clothes en-route if necessary, allowing you to pack fewer items.

SAFETY — PLAY IT SMART

Let’s be frank—don’t take safety lightly and don’t skimp on it. An outdoor first-aid kit is your lifeline in the event of an accident—the one you are legally obliged to carry in your car simply won’t be up to the job.

A multi-tool or sturdy camping knife should also be on your list of essentials. These beauties are versatile: they can be used for cooking, fixing equipment, or fending off overly inquisitive wildlife.

A fire extinguisher should always be close to hand. Look for the clever ones that suffocate flames—despite their compact dimensions, they last longer than the powder- or foam-style ones, and you can safely use them on an electrical fire, too.

COMFORT

While we’re all about that minimalist vibe, a few creature comforts can take your night under the stars from tolerable to transcendent. Bring a couple of foldable chairs and a table? Why not? The soul needs a throne to sit on, even outdoors.

And for the love of God, if you want to take the plunge into the ether of music, throw in a small portable speaker. But listen carefully: remember your manners. The wilderness is no nightclub, and creatures of the wild prefer silence. Respect your surroundings and your neighbours.

CONCLUSION

So here you are, on the brink of your rooftop camping odyssey, armed with your essentials and a spirit ready to plunge into the great unknown. So, grab your kit and prepare for an adventure that will unfurl into a tapestry of memories woven with laughter, camaraderie, and perhaps a little chaos. From the thrill of setting up camp to the profound silence of nature under starlit skies, every moment becomes an opportunity to connect, discover, and explore deep within both the landscape and yourself.

One key tip throughout this journey: Leave No Trace. As you pack, think about your impact on the environment. Choose biodegradable products where possible, dispose of rubbish responsibly, and respect the wildlife you encounter. This ethic extends beyond packing light; it embodies a philosophy of leaving the natural world as you found it.

This month, we’ve looked at just about every aspect of rooftop tents. So here’s a list of the key topics and links to each full article.

STATIC AND DYNAMIC ROOF LOADS Before you even consider which rooftop tent appeals the most, check the roof loads of your vehicle and see how much weight you can legally transport.

ROOF RACKS Once you have established how much you can carry, look at how it can be carried. Is your vehicle equipped with a railing for crossbars, or do you need a roof rack? Is there enough room to get your hand, arm, tools, and the fixtures for the tent beneath the structure so that everything can be securely mounted?

ROOFTOP TENT STYLES Hard-shell tents occupy more space on the roof of the vehicle. Hybrid and soft-shell tents take up less real estate but offer more interior space.

INTERIOR SPACE Consider how many people you intend to accommodate and remember that not everyday will serve you glorious sunshine and warm temperatures. Think of those days when you may need to take refuge from Mother Nature’s wrath.

LADDERS Basically, you have the choice between telescopic and the more traditional rigid variants. Look for rungs wide enough to walk on barefoot, a sturdy design to carry your weight, and feet big enough not to sink into soft ground.

WEATHERPROOFING Even if you only intend to use your rooftop tent during your annual vacation, just remember that the weather is mostly unscripted and can throw all four seasons at you in one day. Yes, it will probably rain and heavy winds can whip up unexpectedly.

INSTALLATION Will your tent be on the vehicle all year round, or only for sporadic weekends and maybe a longer stint in the summer? Do you need a quick release system or will the standard nuts and bolts suffice?

SECURITY In reality, if someone wants your rooftop tent, then they will find a way. Making their life as difficult as possible is the best deterrent.

MATTRESSES If you thought buying a mattress for your bed at home was a challenge, then finding the most comfortable, durable, and outdoor-suitable bedding will up your game even further.

ROOFTOP TENT COVERS Soft-shell covers resemble truck canopies—but is the one on your tent really as tough and capable of coping with all four seasons and low-hanging branches? Hybrid and hard shell are generally more durable, but check if the material is strong enough and able to withstand UV rays.

TENT MATERIALS Hi-tech super-lightweight, heavy canvas or anything in between. Think about breathability, overall weight, and keeping the rain out. At the same time, think of privacy.

THE ZIP(PER) We use them on jeans, jackets, rucksacks, and everywhere else. On a rooftop tent they keep the elements out; they need to be strong and withstand a fair degree of abuse. Learn what to look out for and how to look after them.

WINTER CAMPING Rooftop tents are great all year round. Prepare and layer up for an amazing adventure.

VENTILATION Ventilation is more than just opening windows. It is vital to your health and the health of your rooftop tent. You will be spending some serious money on your lofty abode, so take every precaution to look after it.

STORAGE SPACE Having space to keep your bits and bobs tidy is one thing. Stowing muddy boots or toiletries is another. Learn what your tent should have from the outset and what else you can consider.

ELECTRICITY Bringing light into the darkness of your tent and keeping your phone charged is neither rocket science nor expensive. If you need more power for more equipment, then you might consider installing a comprehensive power supply in your car, with the added benefit of powering a fridge.

MAKING AN ENTRANCE / EXIT Rooftop tents can offer different access points to suit the style of vehicle and your own needs. When more than two persons are in the tent, a second entrance is welcome. If you only have one side entrance, then the person most likely to want to get up in the middle of the night should sleep closest to the door.

THE BEST POSITION ON THE CAR Whereas soft-shell tents are the most versatile, hard shells can usually only be mounted in one position. There are several reasons why a tent should open in a particular direction.

ACCESSORIES Which accessories are genuinely useful, and which ones will enhance the value of the tent if you want to sell it later?

HEATERS Doesn’t sound complicated, but there’s more to them than meets the eye… and not in a good way.

DURABILITY Even the best-made products deteriorate with age and regular use. Even more so if they are not serviced regularly. If you want years of stress-free camping, check the critical features and buy the product you can afford. Once it’s your’s, take good care of it.

SET-UP AND TAKE-DOWN TIMES When the weather is foul or you’re just plain exhausted after a long day, different styles of tent can keep you busy longer before you crawl into bed at night or hit the road in the morning.

COMMUNITY As you embark on your journey to purchase a rooftop tent, remember that the internet is a treasure trove of expertise waiting to be explored. By tapping into online communities, you can equip yourself with detailed knowledge of brands and models, thus ensuring you make an informed decision that suits your camping needs.

VALUE FOR MONEY Understanding your individual needs, assessing the features that matter the most, and calculating your return on investment will ensure that you make a purchase that enhances your outdoor experience while remaining within your budget.

MAINTENANCE Regardless of whether your tent is soft shell, hybrid, or hard shell, consistent upkeep can dramatically improve your camping experience and protect the resale value of your tent.

DRIVING SAFELY Putting a cumbersome weight on top of the car changes how the car handles and brakes. Be mindful when you set off on your journey, and keep an eye out for low underpasses and car parks.

INSURANCE Is your rooftop tent covered by your car insurance policy? Probably not. Learn how to insure your pride and joy.

LEISURE AND THE LAW Inform yourself about local legislation before you set off, and understand where you can and cannot camp.

CONCLUSION

You need to pay attention to a lot of details when buying a new or used rooftop tent. All the above topics and tips are based upon decades of sleeping on top of a Land Rover, in all seasons and in some of the most dramatic climatic conditions.

Camping has evolved significantly over the centuries, and one of the most popular trends to emerge in recent times is the rooftop tent. These innovative mobile sleeping quarters have transformed the classic notion of camping, particularly in Europe, where breathtaking landscapes and rich cultures invite us to neglect ready-made package holidays and create our own adventures. However, before you launch into your next expedition, it is crucial to understand the legal landscape surrounding rooftop tenting in Europe.

It seems that as the popularity of rooftop tents increases, so does the need for awareness around local laws governing camping. Unfortunately, each European country has its own approach, and while some are quite permissive, others can be expensively rigid, especially when it comes to wild camping. Here’s a closer look at some of the important legal considerations to keep in mind:

WILD CAMPING REGULATIONS

Many European nations maintain strict rules regarding wild camping. In France and Spain, for instance, wilderness enthusiasts can camp in designated areas, but they cannot simply set up a tent wherever they please. Spain’s “Ley de Protección del Patrimonio Natural y de la Biodiversidad” governs environmental and camping regulations, and can impose hefty fines for illegal camping.

Conversely, countries such as Norway and Sweden embrace a more relaxed approach. The principle of “Allemansrätten” (freedom to roam) allows outdoor lovers to camp almost anywhere, provided they respect nature and private land. This rule fosters a spirit of adventure, but still calls for a measure of responsibility—so tread thoughtfully!

LOCAL CAMPING PERMITS

Before embarking on your rooftop tent adventure, it is wise to investigate whether you need a camping permit in specific regions. Local authorities often require permission to camp in nature reserves or national parks. For example, camping in the British National Parks is generally limited by the strictest of regulations and, while you can find designated campgrounds, wild camping is generally frowned upon.

VEHICLE REGULATIONS

As charming as a rooftop tent may be, it also adds height and weight to your vehicle. Therefore, it’s prudent to understand the regulations governing vehicle modifications.

As far as driving on highways and byways is concerned, your vehicle is equipped with a non-permanent load that must be safely secured. As such, you have to abide by the local highway code and to adjust your driving style to the influences of the increased weight and the implications it may have on stability.

Speed restrictions are not enforced on rooftop tents per se, but it is wise to follow the guidance of many manufacturers and keep your maximum speed between 100 and 130 km/h.

Read your vehicle documentation and check limitations regarding the static and dynamic roof loads. And while you’re packing all your equipment and other necessities, pay attention make sure you don’t exceed the permissible gross vehicle weight.

The overall width of the vehicle must not exceed 2.55 metres and the overall height should not exceed 4 metres. Measure the height of your vehicle with the rooftop tent installed and make a note of it somewhere easy to find—keep an eye out for low underpasses.

ENVIRONMENTAL RULES

Rooftop campers may, at times, find themselves nestled near pristine landscapes and natural wonders. However, they must also be aware of what is expected of them in terms of environmental stewardship. Many countries enforce strict “Leave No Trace” principles, which call for campers to pack in what they pack out and to avoid damaging flora and fauna. Keeping your campsite tidy and respecting wildlife will enhance the likelihood of future camping opportunities, both for you and for others.

BEST PRACTICES FOR ROOFTOP TENT CAMPING IN EUROPE

With a handle on the legalities, let’s look at some best practices to ensure a smooth experience while using rooftop tents:

RESEARCH YOUR DESTINATION

Thoroughly research the specific camping regulations in the country and region you plan to visit. Online forums, local tourism boards, and seasoned campers can provide valuable insights.

ENGAGE WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES

When in doubt, ask locals about the camping practices and any regulations you should be aware of. Not only does this foster good relations, but they may also be able to provide recommendations for the best locations to pitch your rooftop tent.

Sometimes, it is as simple as asking a landowner for permission to camp on their property.

ADHERE TO LEAVE NO TRACE PRINCIPLES

Always be respectful of the natural environment. Clean up after yourself, avoid lighting fires in uncontrolled areas, and leave your campsite as you found it (or cleaner).

ENSURE VEHICLE COMPLIANCE

Double-check your vehicle’s specifications to ensure that you comply with local regulations. Measure your vehicle’s height with the rooftop tent attached, and be mindful of weight limits imposed by your car’s manufacturer to ensure safe driving.

CONCLUSION

As you embark on this adventurous journey, remember that the heart of camping lies in exploration and connection—with nature, with fellow campers, and with the culture around you. Each country boasts its own unique charm, and every road leads to fresh experiences and discoveries.

Rooftop tents are more than just a trend; they are the gateway to adventure. With a little research and preparation, you can navigate the rules while creating unforgettable memories in the great outdoors.

DISCLAIMER

Please be aware that legislation and regulations regarding rooftop tents can vary widely from country to country, and even from region to region within a single country. It is essential for readers to familiarise themselves with the local laws and guidelines that apply to their area or any area through which they intend to travel. Always consult the local transport authority or legal advisor to ensure compliance with relevant laws. This article does not constitute legal advice and should be used for informational purposes only.

As the popularity of rooftop tents continues to grow among outdoor enthusiasts, it is essential to address a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of owning such a tent: insurance. In this instalment of our 31-part series on rooftop tents, we will explore the importance of having insurance, particularly focusing on the nuances of coverage for non-permanent fixtures on your vehicle.

THE IMPORTANCE OF INSURANCE

Insurance is designed to protect individuals and their property from unexpected events, such as accidents, theft, or damage. When it comes to rooftop tents, the rationale for securing appropriate insurance coverage extends beyond the tangible value of the equipment. It also encompasses liability. In the wilderness or even in a campground, accidents can happen, and being unprepared can lead to significant financial repercussions.

Theft Unfortunately, theft can occur even in seemingly safe areas. A rooftop tent, though securely attached to your vehicle, can be targeted by thieves. Without coverage, the loss of your investment could be financially devastating.

Accidental Damage Suppose you pitch your rooftop tent on a popular campsite. A sudden storm causes a tree branch to break, damaging your tent. Or, what if you overlooked a height restriction, such as in a car park?

All Other Risks Imagine water seeping unnoticed into the tent when it is closed, and the mattress or other material items are permanently damaged due to an onset of mould. These are also items that need to be replaced, along with a repair to the tent itself.

Given these scenarios, it becomes clear that being proactive about securing insurance is critical for anyone considering or currently owning a rooftop tent.

COVERAGE GAPS IN VEHICLE INSURANCE

One of the key challenges amidst the enthusiasm for rooftop tents is the common misconception about insurance coverage. Many vehicle owners assume that their car insurance extends to everything attached to or inside their vehicle, which often isn’t the case, especially for non-permanent fixtures like rooftop tents.

UNDERSTANDING THE LIMITATIONS OF VEHICLE INSURANCE

Vehicle insurance typically covers damages to the vehicle itself and may include losses incurred due to theft or damage while the vehicle is being driven. However, when it comes to accessories—such as rooftop tents—there is no one-size-fits-all approach:

Non-Permanent Fixtures Rooftop tents are considered non-permanent fixtures. As such, many standard car insurance policies do not automatically cover them as part of the vehicle itself. If your tent is damaged or stolen, standard vehicle insurance may leave you without compensation unless you add a specific endorsement for coverage.

Personal Property Coverage While your car insurance might cover personal belongings inside your vehicle (to a degree), rooftop tents are generally categorised differently due to their nature as a camping accessory. Therefore, they may not be considered as personal property in a vehicle while travelling, which means additional coverage is required.

Modifications If you have modified your rooftop tent or added specific features, such as a rooftop awning or additional bedding, those enhancements may also require additional insurance. Many standard policies may not cover modifications unless explicitly stated.

RECOMMENDED INSURANCE OPTIONS

To adequately cover your rooftop tent and associated risks, consider the following options:

Homeowners Insurance If you have homeowners insurance, check whether the policy covers personal property outside your home, including your rooftop tent. These policies can provide some level of coverage for belongings that are stolen or damaged while they are away from your residence.

Specialised Outdoor Gear Insurance Some companies cater specifically to outdoor gear and accessories, offering policies that cover items like rooftop tents, camping equipment, and sports equipment. This type of insurance typically provides broader coverage for damages and theft.

Endorsements and Riders Speak with your car insurance provider about adding an endorsement or rider that specifically covers your rooftop tent. This option can provide the benefit of keeping everything under one policy, while ensuring that your tent is adequately protected.

Regardless of the policy, you need to consider exactly what is covered and the level of compensation. Look for:

Compensation at replacement value.

Insurance cover around the clock and worldwide.

Insurance cover at home and when travelling.

Theft

Damage

Comprehensive cover against all eventualities.

CONCLUSION

First and foremost, do not fall into the trap of assuming your rooftop tent is covered by an existing insurance policy that you have taken out. Be proactive during the phase leading up to your purchase decision and ensure that your rooftop tent is adequately covered before you take receipt and/or mount it onto your vehicle.
