There are brands that arrive fully formed, and there are those that build themselves slowly, piece by piece, in the places where their products are actually used. Big Agnes falls firmly into the latter category.

In 2026, the Colorado-based company marks 25 years in business. A quarter of a century is long enough to see trends come and go, materials rise and fall out of favour, and entire segments of the outdoor industry reinvent themselves more than once. Through that, Big Agnes has remained anchored to a relatively simple idea: sleep matters, and it can be improved.

The company was founded in 2001 in Steamboat Springs, a small mountain town that still shapes how the brand operates. What began as a rough concept for a sleeping system—reportedly sketched out long before it became a product—has grown into a broad catalogue covering tents, mats, camp furniture, packs and clothing. The common thread has been consistency rather than reinvention for its own sake.

Bill Gamber, co-founder and still closely associated with the direction of the company, has often framed it in practical terms. Listen to the people using the gear. Adjust. Refine. Repeat. It is not a particularly glamorous philosophy, but it is one that tends to survive contact with real-world use.

That approach is reflected in how Big Agnes has expanded. Products are not developed in isolation or in idealised conditions, but tested in the same mountains and trails that sit on the company’s doorstep. Over time, that has built a reputation not through marketing claims, but through familiarity. Gear that works, and continues to work.

Earlier this year, the company introduced its VST tent series, aimed at lightweight backpackers and long-distance hikers. The brief is straightforward: reduce weight, improve durability, and retain a level of comfort that makes extended time outdoors sustainable rather than punishing. It is not a radical departure from what has come before, but an iteration of it … something Big Agnes has become known for.

To mark the anniversary, the company is releasing a limited “EST. 2001” collection. It brings together a selection of existing products—sleeping mats, bags, camp furniture and accessories—finished with a design inspired by the alpenglow seen in the nearby Zirkel Wilderness. There is also a small range of apparel and everyday items carrying the same motif.

The collection itself is not the story. It is a marker.

What sits behind it is a company that has grown without losing sight of where its equipment is used. Big Agnes still operates from a small town, but its reach is now global. That brings a different set of responsibilities, particularly around materials, manufacturing and the environments its customers depend on. In recent years, the brand has put increasing weight behind more sustainable production methods and support for conservation and public land initiatives … again, not as a headline, but as a gradual shift in how things are done.

There is a useful moment in Episode 14 of the OverlandEurope podcast, where Bill Gamber talks about the early days of the company and the people behind it. What comes through is not a story of rapid growth or aggressive expansion, but of a team building something they believed in, and then staying close to it as it developed. It explains, perhaps better than any product release, why the brand still feels grounded despite its scale.

Twenty-five years is enough time to establish a reputation. It is also long enough to drift away from it. Big Agnes, for now, appears to have avoided that second part.

And if the past is any indication, the next phase will not be defined by sudden changes, but by the same steady process that got them here in the first place.

Steamboat Springs, USA – April 10, 2025 – Big Agnes, the renowned brand that has redefined outdoor gear, is making waves once again with its latest offering: the Sweetwater UL backpack series. Whether you’re heading out for a day hike or planning an extensive multi-day trek, these backpacks promise to be the versatile companion you’ve been seeking.

The Sweetwater UL series offers three sizes—28L, 43L, and 60L—each tailored to fit your adventure style. The standout feature? The flagship 28L model weighs in at a mere 850 grams, making it lighter than your average backpacking lunch. Designed with multiple torso size options in mind, these packs fit almost everyone, ensuring you get the comfort you need on all your journeys.

One of the most impressive aspects of the Sweetwater UL packs is the commitment to sustainability. Constructed from Recycled Rain™ Ocean 70D nylon ripstop—crafted from discarded fishing nets—these backpacks are made for the eco-conscious explorer. High-strength Robic yarn adds to the durability while remaining ultra-light, and the absence of intentionally added PFAS in the water-repellent coating is a feature outdoor enthusiasts can rally behind.

Comfort is not sacrificed here. Big Agnes has included a flexible harness system that hugs the hips securely, coupled with several adjustment options to cater to various torso lengths. The Load Wrangler carrying system is designed for ultimate carrying comfort, seamlessly shifting the weight through an integrated frame system, allowing you to tackle hills and valleys with ease.

We drove off the paved road and joined a barely discernible track near a bridge, spanning what should have been a torrent. Instead, we looked down into a bone dry, rocky riverbed. Glancing upward one last time before disappearing beneath the dense canopy of foliage, the sky was heavy with menacing clouds, but the onset of drizzle wasn’t yet enough to coax the windscreen wipers into action.

Ahead of us lay terrain that would change dramatically during the steep and laborious ascent into the mountains. The new Rugged-Terrain tyres were going to have their work cut out for them as they made their way across loose dirt and gravel before searching for grip on stages of sheer granite strewn with loose rocks and boulders. Then, the incessant downpour came over the top of the mountain, creating a wash of water mixed with surface soil and turning the already challenging surfaces into something more akin to a non-stick frying pan.

Blundstone Chelsea boots look good, feel good, and my trusty pair of #585 have continued to uphold their end of the bargain for the last four years. I don’t wear them every day, but, generally speaking, they are smart enough for formal occasions and robust enough to cope with the great outdoors, most of the time. Today wasn’t exactly ideal for repeatedly getting in and out of the car to clear a path and check the lay of the land.

For the decades prior to the first time I slipped into my Blundstones, or Blunnies as they are often referred to amongst the brand’s fans, I would always be found wearing boots and shoes with laces. I must admit, I have subsequently grown quite used to the ease of slipping in and out of my Chelsea boots, especially when retiring to the rooftop tent at the end of an adventurous day. (Mind you, I suppose Blundstone Clogs are probably the crowing solution when it comes to getting in and out of my sleeping bag.)

Now, as much as I appreciate #585’s merits for everyday, they do lack the ankle hugging stability of a lace-up. The oil resistent sole and shock absorbing heel mean they are just as much a great wear when driving classic Land Rovers as they are for prolonged walks in the countryside.

BLUNDSTONE ALL-TERRAIN

Blundstone’s All-Terrains, on the other hand, are a completely different kettle of fish and according to the spec sheet, far better equipped to cope with adverse conditions.

VIBRAM® SOLE
Well, you can’t get a more overlanding-appropriate sole than the All-Terrain. Developed by Vibram® exclusively for Blundstone, the characteristics of the Megagrip compound are promising:

100% rubber

High traction tread

Adapts to different surfaces

Provides a sure footing in wet and dry

Profile design efficiently expels stones, mud and snow

Oil and acid resistent (including pet urine)

Withstanding temperatures up to 300°C

The XRD® technology designed into the heel has excellent shock absorbing properties for day-long comfort, all the way up your spine.

UPPERS
Made from selected bovine hides, the 1.8 mm thick uppers are graded weather resistent. I mean, let’s be fair, this is still a Chelsea boot with elastic panels on each side.

Blundstone All-Terrain Chelsea boots are available in four colours: Rustic Black #2055, Rustic Brown #2056, Cocoa Brown #2057, and Black #2058.

INSIDE
The interior is lined with a layer of 0.8 mm bovine leather with a breathable synthetic material at the front.

The Comfort Lite inner sole can be taken out and washed if necessary.

IN AND OUT ELASTICITY
The ease of putting on and taking off, which I have already mentioned, is further facilitated by the front and rear pull tabs. Again, when sat on the edge of the rooftop tent without a floor to push against, slipping into these boots first thing in the morning is so simple because the opening stretches in both directions.

OPINION

Is the Blundstone All-Terrain the ideal overlanding shoe? For some yes, for others maybe not. But what I do like is that the design team have taken an excellent everyday boot that can be worn to a business meeting, a fancy restaurant or in the remotest spaces on the planet, and made it even tougher, grippier, and more weather resilient. And you can still wear them to every occasion.

The All-Terrains are available for men and women in sizes 3 to 13 (UK standard), cost €220 (in Germany), and are an investment that will last for years to come. I wonder if they will ever come with laces…

If you asked me what my favourite personal gadget is, the answer is simple. The AKU Trekker Lite has become a natural extension of my foot. This relatively lightweight hiking boot from AKU, a footwear company based near Treviso in northern Italy, is made from a mix of suede and AIR8000®, an air-permeable textile. In addition, the outer shell is waterproof, but still breathable, thanks to GORE-TEX®. Heel and toe areas are reinforced with Bycast uppers for protection. Reassuring grip on any surface was guaranteed by the robust Vibram® sole.

I wore this light, yet stable, trekking shoe on numerous ventures, and it always performed perfectly: on long hikes in the mountains on gravel and rock, on extended sightseeing tours in megacities, and riding my motorcycle in any weather. Even on hikes in the snow, the boot showed no deficits. As an off-road instructor, I stand often and long on rough gravel or in muddy ruts. Even during staccatos on the cramped pedals in my old Land Rover Defender, the narrow-cut AKU Trekker cut a fine figure.

I had my trekking boots for so long that I don’t even remember when I bought them. You simply slip in and feel good—just like a comfortable sneaker. Its narrow fit is perfect for slender-foot people. The Italians just have a knack when it comes to fit.

AKU is an Italian shoe manufacturer and has been producing mountaineering and hunting footwear for over 40 years. All shoes are made according to traditional shoe technology in their factory within sight of the Italian Alps. The company places equal value on the smallest possible footprint when it comes to the environment.

Although my hiking boots are still good for many miles, I have now upgraded after the GORE-TEX membrane is showing the first leaks after many years. Even the most beautiful symbiosis must come to an end.

My new all-rounder is called Trekker Pro GTX. It is an evolution of the Trekker Lite II model. In addition to the great features of my now retired hiking boot, the successor has been further improved regarding comfort by an optimised two-component sole, which supports the particularly stressed rolling zones. The proven textile AIR8000® renders this hiking boot stable and comfortable, and will certainly accompany me on many new adventures.

In even more challenging terrain, like on extended high-alpine multi-day tours, I rely on the AKU Conero GTX.

Is there a footwear category “overland”? If there were, it would be synonymous for an everyday shoe, characterised by strong uppers and a rugged sole. First and foremost, the shoes must be comfortable to wear for extended periods, regardless of the circumstances. Most likely pulled on in the morning and taken off late at night, they will dance the pedals in a truck, hike, wade through water, stamp out fires, kick rocks, branches and tree trunks out of the way, and protect against ice, rain, humidity and Lut-like desert temperatures.

Overland shoes don’t need to win any prizes for beauty…they are functional and should last years, or even decades.

COURTENEY BOOTS

Founded in 1992 by John and Gale Rice, Courteney Boots derives its name from the British explorer and conservationist Frederick Courteney Selous. Located in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, the company continues to make each pair of boots by hand, using gameskins from sustainable sources.

Craftsmen use selected ostrich, buffalo, antelope, crocodile, hippopotamus, and kudu leather for the range of shoes and boots. The soles are manufactured in-house from natural rubber, and the company imports the finest threads, adhesives.

Contrary to typical business goals to maximise growth and volume, Courteney Boots manufactures just 30 pairs per day…to order, using methods and machines first introduced four decades ago. Each pair of shoes takes three weeks to complete and there is a three-month waiting list.

The all female management team is proud of their work atmosphere and the fact that their employees span several generations of the same families.

Typical customers include conservation experts, adventurers, safari guides and photographers.

THE SELOUS

When I opened the cardboard box, there was more to its contents than just my pair of Selous. A large cotton bag, to store the boots themselves, and a smaller pouch with care products including a brush, polish and a spare set of laces.

This pair is made from grainy brown buffalo hide. If you prefer something a little more ostentacious, there is a two-tone alternative which uses a combination of buffalo and ostrich leather.

Even though the buffalo hide is thick and strong, it was surprisingly supple for a new boot and, as I later found out, quickly adapted to the shape of my foot. The breaking-in period was short and without any pressure points or blisters.

All the seams are double-stitched and those holding the uppers to the leather mid soles, are positioned to protect them against rock abrasions. For further reinforcement, a brass rivet on the leading edge of the eyestay (which houses the lacing system) minimises the risk of tears. As for the lacing system itself, the brass eyelets, D-rings and hooks are strong and well-dimensioned for the thick laces.

The natural rubber sole, characteristic for Courteney footwear, is robust and reminiscent of a ZXL tyre pattern. The deep, firm tread remains flexible and is a recipe for sure footing on any terrain. I haven’t a clue how many kilometres I’ve covered in the last 12 months, but they show no signs of wear—and if they do, re-soling isn’t out of the question.

COMFORT AND PROTECTION

Made of the softest leather, the tongue won’t cause any pressure points and the soft collar fits snuggly above the ankle to prevent twigs, small stones or creatures getting inside.

As far as breathability and waterproofing is concerned, a regularly maintained leather boot or shoe is going to tick both boxes. However, the quality of the hide makes a big difference. Outdoor footwear is destined to get really wet at some stage. Thicker, pre-treated leather will cope better than most thinner, cost-driven alternatives which may crack. I’ve subjected the Selous to some of the worst European downpours, mud baths and scorching summer temperatures without any negative side-effects.

UNIQUE

Because every pair of Courteney boots is unique, each has a serial number stamped into a patch on the heel cap. This is a bit like axe heads from some of the smaller Swedish mills where the smith leaves his stamp for posterity and traceability. I suppose I could go back to the factory and shake the hands of those who spent so much time crafting my boots when I next visit Zimbabwe.

CONCLUSION

The Selous is famous for its rugged comfort and durability. There are countless other people testimony to the quality and attention to detail delivered by the craftsmen at the Courteney factory.

The only two details which may cause some people to have second thoughts are their weight and price. Compared to a synthetic shoe, the Selous is heavier and yes, they are more expensive than some other brands, but by no means off the chart. On the upside, these boots represent a long-term investment: they won’t go out of fashion and are likely to be around for many years to come.

Another reason I like these shoes is because the company puts their responsibilities, in regard to their workforce and the environment, first, as opposed to jumping on the typical big-business corporate band wagon.

Note: I managed to inadvertently immerse one boot in engine oil on the last trip when a five-litre canister fell over in the back of the Land Rover. Unfortuantely, the canister’s neck had a small hole and leaked the contents onto my boot and into the car. Other than slight discolouring, my guess is that the one boot is even more waterproof than before.

Category: overland
Uppers: Buffalo hide
Soles: natural rubber
Weight: 1,120 g Shaft height: 14.5 cm

*refers to a size 14 boot

Of all the Lundhags backpacks, the Gnaur series represents the most advanced in the lineup and is available in three different sizes: 60, 75, and 90 L. The first two are available with the suffixes RS and RL, the 90 is only available as RL. RS stands for Regular Short and RL for Regular Long. In numbers, the RS is adjustable for a torso length between 42 and 48 cm—which accommodates persons of a shorter stature up to 1.70 m, and the RL for taller people.

For the purpose of this evaluation, we are reviewing the Gnaur 60 RS which has all the design features of its counterparts with a capacity typical for short- to mid-range hikes.

MATERIALS

The frame is manufactured using 8 mm aluminium rods and two 20 mm aluminium bars.
Buckles are aluminium.

The main body of the backpack is made from Lundhags PolyCotton (LPC) ECO Ripstop, a mix of 65% polyester and 35% organic cotton (FC Free DWR), 231 g/m2, PU-coating >1,500 mm.

Other materials:

Reinforcements: 100% ECO polyester, Bluesign certified (FC-free DWR), 300 g/m2, PU-coating >1,500 mm

Liner: 100% ECO polyester, 200D Poly Oxford, Bluesign certified (FC-free DWR), 120 g/m2, PU-coating >1,000 mm

FRAME

The aluminium frame assures maximum torsional rigidity at all times. and effectively disperses the weight onto the hip belt which, in turn, contributes to comfort on long hikes.

SUSPENSION

As mentioned above, the ergonomic position of the back pad can be adjusted to accommodate a torso length between 42 and 48 cm. Measure the distance along the spine between the seventh vertebra (the large bone at the base of your neck) to a point which meets a horizontal line running from the top of one hip to the other. This measurement is then referenced to the markings on the backpack.

The shoulder straps are lined with duo-density cushions. The pullers on the shoulder straps can be fixed in a high or low position to keep them level between the frame and the top of the shoulders.

The hip belt is also lined with duo-density cushions, which are designed to cup the hips to improve the load-carrying comfort. Adjustable straps on each side of the belt can be configured to improve stability of the pack.

At the front, the chest strap can be height-adjusted and is equipped with D-rings.

MAIN CAVITY

The 60-litre main cavity provides plenty of space for your gear without the need to rummage deep or unpack everything when in search for that one elusive item. You can access the contents either from the top, by opening one of the side zips, or both to open the large flap.

For additional volume, the neck at the top of pack can be extended and closed with a drawstring. The exterior lid is “floating” and can be adjusted for height with four straps.

Once packed, there is one compression strap at the top (under the lid) and two on each side, to ensure the contents form a compact unit which won’t get a dynamic of its own whilst you are hiking.

POCKETS AND STORAGE

Working my way down from top to bottom, the lid has two pockets and a daisy chain, or holed webbing as Lundhags describe it, for attaching items to its exterior.

Expandable pockets on each side have weather-protected zips, and there are elastic pockets further down.

Side pockets on the hip belt relieve your trousers of items such as a cellphone, keys or snacks, but still keep them readily available and easy to access.

PORTABILITY / HANDLES

On the front of the backpack is a large sturdy handle, which is good for carrying or helping a friend to put it on. Another handle is on the rear side.

RAIN PROTECTION

The backpack’s material will withstand a light shower, but there is an integrated rain cover inside a pocket at the base for heavier downpours.

DURABILITY

Lundhags have taken everything into account. From the LPC Ripstop to the truly robust aluminium buckles. And should something become damaged such as the suspension, parts for repairs are available.

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

Short hikes can easily turn into physically demanding excursions, especially if it is early in the season and the trails haven’t been properly cleared. The Gnaur is built to withstand thorns and sharp craggy rocks.

The aluminium frame is indeed very sturdy, and together with the adjustable straps and the ergonomically padded hip belt, this system is a strong recipe for a well-balanced load and comfort on long hikes.

The abundance of pockets and eyelets, which can be used for attaching items with a carabiner, is further enhanced by their accessibility when you’re actually on the move. And when you do stop, the two long zips open the backpack up so that you can find everything without having to unpack; they also mean that you can pack everything more efficiently in the first place.

At some point during a hike, you’re going to take your backpack off, for example, if you want to get into a car or just to put it down when you’ve reached camp. That’s when the two handles come into their own, especially the larger one on the front.

VERDICT

The Gnaur 60 RS is a reliable and multifunctional partner for hiking all year round, and it is built to last.

PROS

Sturdy fabrics and robust buckles

Easy to use even with gloves

Widely adjustable for a perfect fit

Plenty of fixing points for equipment

Also available with 75 and 90 L capacities and for different lengths

CONS

At 3.21 kg, not exactly a featherweight

Secure grip in all terrain, comfortable over long periods, not restrictive when driving, solid and robust. That’s how I would describe my ideal travel shoe. Qualities that I have found in some shoes—but rarely without at least the hint of compromise. A firm, supportive fit usually has its limits behind the wheel. Comfort often comes at the expense of sturdiness and support. A shoe that combines all those characteristics in one single design seemed elusive…that is, until I slipped into my Blundstones for the first time.

Meanwhile, my boots have seen plenty of use, and they still amaze just as much as they did on the very first day. Whether snow, ice, mud, water (from above and below) or heat, whether long rides, hikes or standing in one spot for hours—I have yet to feel compelled to take them off. Sharp objects such as sticks and stones, dense bushes armed with long thorns; I have never spared my Blundstones; they mastered every situation, and if they could tell the stories, they happily would.

With their sturdy, easy-to-care, supple leather, and the barest minimum seams, not only are they faithful companions on and off the road, they also look smart enough to wear at functions and other events. More out of curiosity, I ordered Chelseas, not the lace-ups I usually wear, but am utterly convinced. Putting them on and taking them off is as easy as slipping on gloves, a characteristic truly worth its salt.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that more than 150 years of experience have been channelled into the product—despite their high-grip sole and sturdy uppers, these boots are very versatile and remarkably lightweight. These boots walk the talk.

It’s been a pandemic eternity since the overlanding community had the opportunity to go to an exhibition. So, with the Adventure Southside in Friedrichshafen about to open its doors from August 20th to 22nd, it’s fair to say we’re all getting a little bit excited.

Not only is this the first show this year, this is also the first time, the team behind Overland Journal Europe are presenting “The Brands We Trust” in the @overlandeurope Hall.

MOTORCYCLE, 4X4, TRUCK

THE PAST: the oldest exhibit is 73 years old – a 1948 Land Rover Series 1. In 1956, six students arrived in Singapore after completing what was considered one of the longest land journeys possible. First Overland – the journey, and the book of the same name, that has inspired countless adventurers. Several original Camel Trophy contenders represent the ultimate overlanding challenge.

THE PRESENT: contemporary models from Land Rover, Mercedes Benz, KIA, Royal Enfield and Iveco. Whether you are looking for something as a basis for an extended worldwide expedition, or to expand your horizons during your vacation, or just for a family weekend escape, we are presenting a very varied lineup. Matzker, the Land Rover specialists, are presenting a number of vehicles and modifications to enhance your journey.

THE FUTURE: we don’t need a crystal ball to see that something new is about to shake up the 4×4 market. The INEOS Grenadier is the highlight of the vehicle collection and this is the first time the overland community will have a chance to see one of the prototypes live. With the order books about to open, this is an opportunity to be at the front of the queue.

GEAR

Tyres, solar, electronics, water filtration, tents, navigation, storage, medical training, clothes, radio communication, e-bikes and more. A wide range of equipment we have used on tours in the past, and are planning to use in the near future, is on display: Our team is ready to share their impressions with you.
We are also being supported by some of the manufacturers, so that you discuss your specific needs and they can help you find the best solution.

DESTINATIONS

When we want to explore remote terrain and learn about the country, its history and its culture, we approach local, experienced guides.

We’ve invited José Almeida from Dream Overland to join us on Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd. In 2019, José was our man on the ground when we spent several months exploring Portugal’s back country and uncovering its heritage. Come and talk to him and discover the opportunities he has to offer in one of the most fascinating countries.

Konrad Fobbe of Special Adventure is also joining us to present some of the guided tours he has on offer.

COMPETITIONS

With prizes valued at a total of more than €8.000, there are plenty of reasons to take part in the raffles being held throughout the duration of the show.

JOIN US

Be part of the conversation. We are all looking forward to being able to travel again and an overlanding doesn’t always mean going to far distant continents. An adventure can involve a weekend away close to home or a two-week vacation in a different country. Europe has so much to offer – after all, that’s why people from every nation around the world come here.

Join the @overlandeurope community. We promote environmentally responsible vehicle supported travel.
